Jen Ballen, CEO & Founder
I am passionate about empowering individuals and businesses to take positive action to alleviate environmental & social deficiencies.
My professional background spans corporate sustainability, investment management and technology entrepreneurship. I first launched The Sustainable Investor in 2014 as an editorial blog demonstrating through data-driven research that profitability and environmental/social impact need not be mutually exclusive. A thirst for learning has led to many blog posts over the years and I am currently still responsible for all of the content on the blog.
I am also the Co-Founder and Board President of Before It's Too Late, a virtual reality prototyping lab designed to blend art, technology and science to ignite urgency and collaboration toward addressing climate change. I am the co-author of the 2017 MIT published case study "First Solar", which received EMFD's “Best Bringing Technology to Market” Case Study award.
I hold a B.S. in Finance and Marketing from Lehigh University (summa cum laude honors), and an M.B.A. and Sustainability Certificate from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Greetings and thank you for exploring The Sustainable Investor! I hope you find your experience enjoyable and are able to find eco-friendly products in our Marketplace that improve and fulfill your life as they have for us.
My professional experience spans environmental remediation, maritime shipping and innovation. I previously worked in a management role on the Hudson River Environmental Remediation Project where I found a passion for making the planet a cleaner and healthier place. As a licensed ship captain for several years, I have acquired a love and appreciation for the sea but have also encountered the unfortunate results of ocean pollution plastics. These experiences have helped influence the focus of the products we recommend.
I hold a B.S. in Marine Transportation from Massachusetts Maritime Academy, I am an M.S in Project Management (candidate) at Northeastern University and I am a listed inventor on U.S. patent # US10167609B1, a vessel for dredging underwater surfaces with increased production capabilities.
